The 7 Pitfalls to Avoid in Your Network Marketing Business

June 26, 2005 | Filed Under Network Marketing

Network marketing is a proven and very successful business to be involved in and just like any business problems will arise from time to time and threaten your success. Below you will find 7 of the most common pitfalls of network marketing and how to avoid them.

1. Lack of Focus and Lack of Consistency
This happens when you are trying to focus on to many things at once and/or trying to do everything yourself. You get spread to thin and your business suffers, your emotions go through all the spectrums from depressed to angry to excited and when your emotions go up and down, so does your production. Without consistent production you cannot succeed in network marketing.

The solution to this problem is relatively simple, and that is to know your ‘why’. Your ‘why’ is the reason you got involved with network marketing and what you want to get out of it. If you lose sight of why you are doing this business in the first place, you will find it very hard to grow your business.

2. Not Plugging Into the System
This is probably one of the most common mistakes of all network marketers and can mean disaster to your business as well as to your uplines business. New people always want to reinvent the wheel, they think that they have a better way of doing something that the millionaires who have made the system work. Nine times out of ten they fail and they wind up wasting time, money, energy and potentially burning dozens of prospects.

The solution to this problem is to DROP YOUR EGO! The system works, why make things harder on yourself than necessary. The pioneers of network marketing have over the years developed a basically fool proof system that if followed to a ‘T’ will lead you to network marketing success. So just follow what works, and don’t try and reinvent the wheel.

3. Not “Edifying” your leader
This can have very serious consequences in your ability to recruit and to appear credible to your prospects. You are not edifying your leader to make them feel good, you are doing it to promote the business and show people it can be done. Some of the most common problems that arise from lack of edification are, a lack of appointments and guests at meetings, no shows; people who say they will come, but don’t, and also results in low sign up rates.

The solution to this is to prepare your ‘1 minute commercial’, know your leaders story and then share it with everyone, develop a little commercial that you give to all of your prospects and guests, tailor it to the individual and watch your business grow.

4. Not Having Enough Daily Activities
Lack of things to do everyday is a big problem with new representatives; this indicates a lack of proper training by their sponsor and upline. If they are not making phone calls, creating a list of prospects, or making appointments, then they are getting no results which means neither are you. And if your new people don’t see results they will quit, and you will have to start over.

The solution to this problem, is to train your people. Sit down with then individually or in small groups and help them create a list of prospects, teach them how to make calls and let them watch you make a few calls to prospects, help them set up appointments for one on one presentations. All in all, you must help them get results.

5. Inviting “Down” and Stop Inviting
This occurs when you or your downline start trying to recruit negative and broke people, or you just stop recruiting all together. Either way it means disaster for your business. Network marketing costs money to join; you know that, and it requires you to be a positive upbeat person and you also know this. So don’t waste your time trying to recruit negative, broke people who aren’t really interested. Also if you totally stop recruiting, then so will your downline, they will do as their leader “does” not as he “says”.

To solve this you need to get back out there and start personally recruiting new people into the company, built credibility with your prospects through edification, and show your downline how it is done. DO that and they will do it too.

6. Spending Time with People Who Don’t Want It
This is a very common problem among leaders with growing downlines. You must learn to spend your time with those that “deserve” your time, NOT those that “need” it. Those that need it are time bandits and focusing on them will cause your business to crumble.

The solution to this problem is to learn the 80/20 rule and live by it. The 80/20 rule dictates that 20% of your downline will produce 80% of the results. This is true in all aspects of business. So focus on the 20% of your people and spend the vast majority of your time supporting and helping them and your business will flourish.

7. Allowing Your Personal Fears to Drag You Down
This is something that every network marketer who wants to be successful must confront and deal with in their own way. The fear of success is the number one reason of failure in network marketing. The fear of success paralyzes you and causes inaction, when what you need is massive action. This fear and other fears like the fear of public speaking, will hold you back and prevent you from ever moving forward with your business.

In order to solve this problem, you must attack your lack. Attack your weaknesses in your mind and body and conquer them ASAP and in doing this you will become the kind of person you need to be to grow your network marketing business.

The above seven business pitfalls are the most commonly seen problems by network marketers while building their businesses, but by no means are they the only ones. Therefore you need to pay attention to your business and watch your downline carefully so that when a problem does arise you can control it before it spreads.
