The virtual world of Internet and web has fulfilled the dream of many of converting the world to a global village. The idea of the global village was to have a peaceful world, with no borders and no limitations. This idea was fulfilled with telecommunication and the Internet. Messages take seconds to reach to other parts of the world. Information about a topic appears with the blink of an eye and is free for use through internet. The internet information base is so wide and spread world wide that there is hardly a topic in the world on which you cannot find information.

Messages reach people in a blink of an eye. News, media, social networking sites have already allowed the freedom of expression. Internet knowledge base is so advanced that people can find information related to any topic and with hardly any cost.

With changing trends of searching for information on web, came the concept of search engines. Consider a search engine to be like a catalog in a public library where you can search for book from all over the world.

One must have know-how to a certain extent of how search engines retrieve information and what tricks can be used for fast and correct retrieval of information. Information is plenty but sifting the right information is the tricky part.

But again, searching the web via search engines is the ‘in’ thing these days because it saves time and web engines are up to date with the latest technology and advancements in different subjects in the world.

It is also important to know how search engines retrieve information on the internet. With a knowledge base so wide, it is a huge task for search engines to bring quality information. Although search engines are not truly artificially intelligent yet but nowadays they are advanced enough to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information.

Search engines do not share the algorithm or their internal working and the rules they use to retrieve information but we can know enough about their main methods by practicing a bit.

Search engines use keywords written by user in their search and compare exact matches and the density at which they appear on a web page. The density measure varies from search engine to search engine. However, while searching make sure you use ‘plus’ operator instead of ‘and’ and try not to use prepositions, articles or helping verbs and search engines ignore that.

Use short, to the point and relevant keywords while searching and do not use long sentences. The chances will be that you will end up with variety of results and not so relevant ones as the search engines will use exact keywords for conducting search.

Always check the credibility and the authenticity of the source that you’ve gotten while searching the web via search engines because not all information on web is correct.

Remember, not everything on internet is authentic. Before using any information gathered through searching the web via search engines, check the authenticity of sources. Not to mention check the credentials of the author quoting. It is just like going to a library and looking for correct and authentic resources. Happy surfing!

Most search engines can be told to search for all words in order rather than every word individually. Google Search Engine Submission More people should go around and pick some other search engine and see what results they get. Pulling up a list of search engines you can see that even specialized search engines are now out there.
