Home lighting requires careful planning as it is responsible for the whole look and feel of an area apart from functional needs. There is a wide range of home lighting fixtures available now a days. Here we will be discussing about the most common portable fixtures used in homes- lamps and lamp shades.

First comes the accent lamps. They can be used in bedrooms, bathrooms, foyer. Area etc Basically they can be used anywhere you need some extra lighting. Since they are under 20 inches in height, they are best for this purpose.

Table lamps are usually anywhere from 25 to 32 inches in height and are used for general purpose lighting in living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and family rooms.

Another type of lamps are the desk lamps. They are around 12 to 20 inches high and are used in areas where some specific tasks are performed. For lighting up the dark corners, floor lamps are the best. Wall lamps are a popular choice for bedrooms. They are mainly used where table space is limited.

Lamps are now an important component of home decor accessories. So, take some time out to choose the right kind of lamps which go well with the entire decor theme. Some of the most favorite one’s are : neutral tans, off-whites, antique whites, iron and of course the polished brass.

There are three-way switch lamps also available and they look good in home. But, for those keep one thing in mind, always go for a three-way bulb to get the desired illumination effect.

Not only the lamp, but the shade should also be selected carefully. Keep in mind that the shade you select should be wider than the widest point on the lamp body. The general rule for lamps shades is, they should be equal to the length of the base of the lamp to the bottom of the bulb socket.

There are 3 main things to consider when it comes to lamps. First, the top diameter. Second, the bottom diameter and third, the shade’s height. You will also find a great variety in the lamp shades material. The most popular one’s are: silk, cotton, linen, plastic/vinyl and paper.
