3 Common SEO Myths
Compiled for the benefit of SEO beginners, here are some SEO myths that we plan to debunk and along the way, we hope you will understand the way search engines actually behave and stop believing what some self-claimed SEO experts say about the behavior of search engines.
Guaranteed #1 ranking within 1 week!
Not entirely a myth but it is a baseless sales tactic used by many bogus SEO companies trying to lure unknowing individuals away from their hard-earned cash, in hope of bringing in more traffic to their websites. For your information, search engines take at least 2 to 3 weeks to even spider or index a website. Irregardless of the search engine in question! Frankly speaking, it takes someone with about at least 5 years experience in constant research and direct contact with search engines to fully understand the workings of a search engine. Even then, the search engines will continue to change. What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow.
Some even say that getting to the number 1 spot is sometimes a lot of work, patience and more than a single dose of pure luck! So, go figure if they tell you they GUARANTEE you the #1 spot.
Here’s an excerpt of what an employee of Google.com, the world’s largest search engine for the moment, have to say about being guaranteed the #1 spot. “No one can guarantee you a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, or that claim a ‘special relationship’ with Google, or that claim to have a ‘priority submit’ to Google”
There you have it. From the horse’s mouth.
Bad links will hurt your traffic
Here’s the thing. The more people there are who are linking to your website, the more popular the search engines think you are. Therefore, the more useful they think your website is and the higher you will rank in the search engines. Makes senses?
And this spurred on another myth: bad links with hurt your website ranking. Bad links from link farms or links from websites totally unrelated to your website (like clothing website linking to you PC hardware online store) will not hurt your ranking with search engines. It won’t do your ranking any good but it won’t hurt your website ranking with search engines either.
Free site submission to 10,000 search engines with just one click!
The funny thing is that there aren’t even 10,000 search engines to begin with, so, how does the free automatic search engine submission service work? There are more or less 10 major search engines that deliver most of the traffic. All the other so-called ‘search engines’ are actually FFA (Free for all) pages where anyone can place their links into totally free. Submitting to FFA pages won’t help at all and there is a general consensus that submitting your website to FFA pages is a total waste of time.
The list of SEO myths is probably endless and as we continue to develop the infrastructure of the Internet, the more myths there are going to be. So, the next best thing to do is to hire a legitimate professional SEO expert to deal with all the nitty gritty details of search engine optimization. It may cost you a little (or a lot, depending on who you hire) but at the end of the day, it will save you a lot of headache.
